Interior of the apartment of 60 m² in the silent centre of Riga – at Hospitāļu Street.

The small, compact apartment which is located in some of the buildings of neofunctionalism style of Riga has recently experienced replanning and reconstruction in order to create attractive residential environment instead of the area with worthless dark and long corridors and small rooms by bringing light and space in it. The largest value of the layout after reconstruction and improvement of the apartment is elegant and brave overcoming of perception limits of the rooms by creating large space and harmony in a small number of square metres.

Symmetry dominates in the layout of the premises but it is deliberately disarranged which is obtained by the layout of lighting fixtures and sharply contrasting colours of wall finish. The common solution of the premises is elegantly simple and laconic, the minimalism concept does not envisage excessive and superficial details.

White and light colours dominate in the living-room which is separated from the entrance hall with a decorative grating and these various shades mutually contrast in the sofa, table and wall planes which emphasize the black chairs designed by Philip Philippe Starck. The white plastering walls of the interior make a convincing and efficient impression contrasting with oiled light oak flooring and the accentuated dark brown painting of the walls.

The presence of oak coating in the built-in furniture of the bedroom successfully supplements the interior with a warm touch. The well-considered layout of the room has provided space and a cosy work place has also found its location here by mounting a table surface next to the window aperture.

The composition of natural colours: white, brown, grey and natural light oak calms down and reminds about the natural processes behind the window.

Bulthaup kitchen furniture with an island area which is built in the studio type area in a rather untraditional way – a bar counter may be used both; as a work surface, and dining-table daily, and a party table upon welcoming guests. Plating of the lighting fixtures in the kitchen creates relaxing and pleasant party atmosphere even every day and especially during parties when the kitchen may be both; a place of common work during cooking, and a place of party due to the comfortable layout.
