The Faculty of Architecture of the Riga Technical University Receives Book Donations from Vincent and gmp
11.03.2016

On the 8th of January, Vincent Architecture, as the multi-year cooperation partner of the professor Meinhard von Gerkan and as the co-organizer of the exhibition The Lines of Thoughts presented to the Faculty of Architecture and Urban Planning of the Riga Technical University several books on the creative works of the professor Meinhard von Gerkan.

The faculty’s methodical library collection is complemented by the three books on the great master's life and creative works: Meinhard von Gerkan: Vielfalt in der Einheit, Meinhard von Gerkan: Biografie in Bauten 1965-2015 and Aus freier Hand: Meinhard von Gerkan: 50 Jahre Architektur in Zeichnungen und Skizzen. Katalog zur Ausstellung

The head of the Department of the History of Architecture and Theory Dr. habil. arch. Janis Krastinsh, accepting the present, emphasized that the books and the visiting of the exhibition is a valuable pedagogical and didactic material for the students. The professor stated that the exhibition The Lines of Thoughts. Meinhard von Gerkan - 50 Years of Architecture in Sketches and Drawings" is, in his opinion, the most original solo exhibition of the architectural works, demonstrating how an architectural thought obtains a visual image in a freehand sketch.

In the today’s era of computerization, it is difficult to convince the students to use drafting. A computer programme is an instrument for the execution of a project, but not an instrument for thinking. The main idea arises in another level which differs from a computer programme, and exactly the hand-drawn sketch lines allow arising innovative thoughts and artistically expressive architecture. The example demonstrated by such a great personality as the professor Meinhard von Gerkan, will inspire the students of architecture to create their architectural works, stated professor Janis Krastinsh.
